How to clear browsing history in Safari on a Mac

2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Open Safari, click History in the menu bar and choose Clear History. Pick how far back to clear, such as the last hour, today or all history, and click Clear History.

Clearing history removes the list of pages you visited, along with cookies and cached files from that period. It can fix a site that misbehaves and keeps your browsing private on a shared Mac.

Step by step

  1. Open Safari and click History

History is in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

  2. Choose Clear History

It is at the bottom of the menu.

  3. Pick a time range

The last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history.

  4. Click Clear History

Websites you were signed in to during that period will ask you to log in again.

Good to know

To remove single pages, choose History, Show All History, select the entries and press Delete.

To remove data for one website only, open Safari, Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data, search for the site and click Remove.

If iCloud is on for Safari, history is cleared on your other Apple devices as well.

To browse without saving history at all, choose File, New Private Window.

In short: Safari, History, Clear History, choose the range.
