Can't focus? Seven simple ways to stop getting distracted: pick one task, put your phone out of sight, close what you don't need, work in short blocks (the Pomodoro technique), write distractions down, take real breaks, and look after the basics.

You sit down to work. Five minutes later, you're on your phone, and you don't even remember picking it up. If focus feels harder than it used to, you're not alone. Here are seven simple ways to focus better.
First, why is focus so hard? Every notification, tab and message pulls your attention somewhere else. And every time you switch, your brain needs time to get back into the task. Those small switches add up to a lot of lost time.
Step by step

Decide on one task
Before you start, write down the one thing you'll work on next. Not a list of ten things. One. When you know exactly what you're doing, it's much easier to notice when you drift away from it.

Put your phone out of sight
Not face down on the desk. In another room, or in a drawer. Even a phone you're not using can pull at your attention. Turn on a focus or do not disturb mode, so only the most important calls get through.

Close what you don't need
Close extra tabs, email and chat while you work. If you need to check them, do it at set times, like once an hour, instead of every few minutes.

Work in short blocks
Set a timer for twenty five minutes and work on your one task until it rings. Then take a five minute break. This is called the Pomodoro technique. A clear finish line makes it easier to start, and easier to keep going.

Write distractions down
When a thought pops up, like I need to reply to that message, don't act on it. Write it on a piece of paper next to you, and deal with it in your break. Your mind can let go, because it knows the thought is saved.

Take real breaks
In your break, stand up, stretch, get some water, or look out of the window. Scrolling on your phone isn't really a break. It fills your head with more information.

Look after the basics
Sleep, water, food and movement all affect focus. After a bad night's sleep, everything feels harder. A short walk, a glass of water, or a proper meal can do more for your concentration than another coffee.
Good to know
And be patient with yourself. Focus is like a muscle. If you can only focus for ten minutes today, start there, and build up slowly.
In short: Pick one task, hide your phone, close what you don't need, work in short blocks, write distractions down, take real breaks, and look after the basics.
