2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Swipe down twice from the top of the screen and tap Do Not Disturb, or Modes then Do Not Disturb on newer phones. Calls and notifications stay silent until you turn it off. Set exceptions under Settings, Modes or Notifications.
Do Not Disturb silences calls, messages and app notifications. You choose which people and apps can still get through, and alarms keep working.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them, so the Samsung name is given where it differs. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.
Step by step
Open Quick Settings
Swipe down twice from the top of the screen.
Tap Do Not Disturb
On recent Pixel phones, tap Modes first, then Do Not Disturb.
Choose who can interrupt
Touch and hold the tile to open its settings. Under People, choose whose calls and messages come through. Starred contacts is a good choice. Under Apps, allow the few apps that matter.
Set a schedule
Tap Schedules and add the hours you sleep or work.
Good to know
Allow repeat callers lets a second call from the same number within 15 minutes ring through.
On Samsung: Settings, Notifications, Do not disturb, or Modes and Routines.
Alarms are allowed by default. Check "Alarms and other interruptions" if you rely on your phone to wake you.
In short: Quick Settings, Do Not Disturb. Hold the tile to set exceptions.
