How to update apps on Android

Short answer

Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Manage apps and device, and tap Update all. Automatic updates are set under Play Store Settings, Network preferences, Auto-update apps.

App updates close security holes and fix bugs. The Play Store normally installs them by itself on Wi-Fi, but a manual check helps when an app misbehaves.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them, so the Samsung name is given where it differs. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.

Step by step

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture

It is in the top right corner.

  2. Google PlayManage apps and deviceNotifications & offersPayments and subscriptionsSettings

    Tap Manage apps and device

The Overview tab shows how many updates are waiting.

  3. Tap Update all

Or tap See details to update single apps and read what changed.

  4. Network preferencesApp download preferenceAuto-update appsAuto-play videos

    Turn on automatic updates

Go back, tap Settings, Network preferences, Auto-update apps, and choose Over Wi-Fi only.

Good to know

Google Play system updates are separate: Settings, System, Software updates, or Security & privacy, System & updates on some versions.

If an update is stuck on Pending, check free storage, switch Wi-Fi off and on, and restart the phone.

Samsung's own apps update through the Galaxy Store app.

In short: Play Store, profile picture, Manage apps and device, Update all.
