How to zoom in on an Android screen with magnification

2 min read · 8 steps · Updated 3 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, Accessibility, Magnification and switch on the Magnification shortcut. Then use the shortcut, for example the accessibility button or holding both volume keys, and tap the screen to zoom in. Pinch with two fingers to change the zoom and drag two fingers to move. Use the shortcut again to stop.

Magnification enlarges anything on the screen up to eight times, in every app, including pictures and apps whose text size cannot be changed. It is also the usual reason for a phone screen that is suddenly zoomed in and will not go back: the shortcut was triggered by accident.

Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones and Google's own apps on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them.

Step by step

  1. Turn on the shortcut

Open Settings, tap Accessibility and then Magnification. Switch on Magnification shortcut.

  2. Choose how to start it

Tap the shortcut setting and pick one: the accessibility button at the edge of the screen, holding both volume keys, or tapping the screen three times quickly. Google notes that the triple-tap option can make the phone react a little more slowly to taps.

  3. Zoom in

Use your shortcut, then tap anywhere on the screen except the keyboard and the navigation bar. The screen is enlarged around that point.

  4. Move around and change the zoom

Drag two fingers to move across the screen. Pinch two fingers together or apart to zoom out or in.

  5. Zoom only for a moment

Use your shortcut, then touch and hold the screen. Drag your finger to look around. When you lift the finger, the zoom ends at once. This is the quickest way to read one small line.

  6. Magnify only part of the screen

Under Settings, Accessibility, Magnification, tap Magnification type and choose partial screen. A movable window then shows the enlarged area and the rest stays normal.

  7. Follow what you type

In the same settings, switch on Follow typing, so the enlarged area moves along with the text as you write.

  8. Stop the zoom

Use the shortcut again. If the screen is stuck zoomed in and you do not know the shortcut, try holding both volume keys for a few seconds, or tapping three times quickly.

Good to know

If the zoom keeps starting by accident, switch off Magnification shortcut in the same settings.

If everything on the phone is simply too small all the time, a larger text and display size is the better fix: how to make text bigger on an Android phone.

In short: Settings, Accessibility, Magnification, shortcut on. Use the shortcut and tap to zoom, two fingers to move and pinch, hold for a temporary zoom, shortcut again to stop.
