iPhone microphone not working? 6 fixes to try

2 min read · 6 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Remove the case and clear the microphone openings, then test: record a Voice Memo while speaking at the bottom of the iPhone and a video while speaking at the top. If one app cannot hear you, turn it on under Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone.

An iPhone has several microphones: at the bottom for calls, and at the top front and back for speakerphone and video. If people cannot hear you, or recordings are silent or muffled, find out which microphone is affected and whether the cause is a blockage or a permission.

Step by step

  1. Remove the case and screen protector

Take off any case, film or screen protector. A badly fitting one can cover a microphone opening.

  2. Clear the openings

Look at the small holes at the bottom edge, beside the rear camera and in the receiver at the top of the screen. Remove any fluff or dirt gently.

  3. Test the bottom microphone

Open the Voice Memos app, tap the Record button and speak at the bottom of the phone. Stop the recording and play it back. This is the microphone used on ordinary calls.

  4. Test the top microphones

Open the Camera app and record a video while speaking at the top of the iPhone. Switch to the other camera, record again and play both back. These are the microphones used on speakerphone.

  5. Check the app's permission

If the microphone fails in one app only, open Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone and switch that app on. If it is already on, or the app is not listed, contact the app's developer.

  6. Disconnect Bluetooth and restart

A connected headset or car kit may be acting as the microphone. Turn Bluetooth off under Settings, Bluetooth, restart the iPhone and test again.

Good to know

If your voice is still unclear in the test recordings after cleaning, the microphone needs service. Contact Apple Support.

Do not use pins, liquids or compressed air on the microphone openings.

An orange dot at the top of the screen means an app is using the microphone at that moment.

In short: Remove the case, clear the openings, test with Voice Memos and a video, check Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone.
