Android storage full? How to see what's using space, use the built-in cleaner (Files by Google), back up photos and use Free up space, clean WhatsApp storage, clear app cache, remove or archive unused apps, empty Downloads, and use a memory card or the cloud.

Storage full again? Your Android phone slows down, photos won't save, and apps won't update. Here's how to free up gigabytes, without losing anything important.
First, see what's using the space. Open Settings, then Storage. You'll see a breakdown: apps, images, videos, audio, documents and system. Start with the biggest category. Menu names can be a little different, depending on your phone's brand.
Step by step

Use the built in cleaner
Most phones have a free cleaning tool. On many phones it's the Files by Google app. Tap Clean, and it suggests junk files, duplicates, large files and old downloads you can delete. Always check before you delete.

Back up photos, then free up space
Photos and videos are usually the biggest problem. If you use Google Photos, turn on backup and wait until it says backup complete. Then use Free up space, which removes the copies on your phone that are already safely backed up. Check a few photos online first.

Clean up chat apps
WhatsApp can quietly use gigabytes. Open WhatsApp, Settings, Storage and data, then Manage storage. Delete large videos and forwarded files you don't need. You can also turn off automatic media downloads.

Clear app cache
Apps store temporary files called cache. Go to Settings, Apps, choose an app like your browser or a social app, then Storage, and tap Clear cache. Don't tap Clear data unless you want to reset the app.

Remove or archive apps you don't use
Uninstall apps you haven't opened in months. On newer versions of Android, you can also archive an app. It removes most of the app, but keeps your data, so you can bring it back later.

Check your downloads folder
Old PDFs, installers and videos often sit in Downloads for years. Open the Files app, go to Downloads, sort by size, and delete what you don't need.

Use a memory card or the cloud
If your phone has a memory card slot, move photos and videos there. Otherwise, store big files in the cloud.
Good to know
And restart your phone once you're done. It can clear temporary files and help everything run smoothly.
In short: Check what's using space, run the cleaner, back up and free up photos, clean chat apps, clear cache, remove apps, and empty your downloads.
