How to turn on Battery Saver on Android
2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Open Settings, tap Battery, tap Battery Saver and switch on Use Battery Saver. To make it start by itself, open Schedule and reminders and choose a battery level such as 20%.
Battery Saver darkens the screen theme, pauses apps in the background and slows some syncing, so the last part of your battery lasts much longer. You can switch it on by hand or let it start at a level you choose.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them, so the Samsung name is given where it differs. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.
Step by step
Open Settings and tap Battery
Open the Settings app and tap Battery. On Samsung phones it is under Battery, or Device care then Battery.
Tap Battery Saver
On Samsung the same feature is called Power saving.
Switch on Use Battery Saver
The battery icon at the top of the screen changes colour and the phone switches to the dark theme.
Set a schedule
Tap Schedule and reminders and switch on Turn on based on battery level. Move the slider to the level where it should start, for example 20%. Leave Turn off at 90% switched on so it stops by itself. On older versions these options are called Set a schedule and Turn off when charged.
Good to know
The quick way: swipe down from the top of the screen twice and tap the Battery Saver tile. If it is not there, tap the pencil icon and drag it in.
Extreme Battery Saver on Pixel phones goes further and pauses most apps. Use it when you need the phone to last many more hours.
While Battery Saver is on, some apps only refresh when you open them, and "Hey Google" may stop listening.
In short: Settings, Battery, Battery Saver, switch it on, and add a schedule at 20%.
