iPhone mobile data not working? 8 fixes to try

2 min read · 8 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Check that Mobile Data is switched on under Settings, Mobile Service, turn Airplane Mode on and off, and restart the phone. Then check for a carrier settings update and make sure the app you are using is allowed to use mobile data.

If the internet works on Wi-Fi but not on the mobile network, the cause is a switch on the phone, your data allowance or the network itself.

Step by step

  1. Check that Mobile Data is on

Open Settings, Mobile Service and make sure Mobile Data is switched on. With two lines, check which line is selected for data.

  2. Turn Airplane Mode on and off

Wait ten seconds in between. The phone reconnects to the network.

  3. Check the signal

One bar or "SOS" at the top means poor or no coverage. Move near a window or outside.

  4. Check your allowance

Open your network's app or text their balance code. If the monthly data is used up, the network slows or stops it.

  5. Allow the app to use mobile data

In Settings, Mobile Service, scroll down to the list of apps. Any app switched off there only works on Wi-Fi.

  6. Turn on roaming when abroad

Settings, Mobile Service, your line, Data Roaming. Check the price with your network first.

  7. Update carrier settings

Connect to Wi-Fi and open Settings, General, About. If an update is available, a prompt appears within a few seconds.

  8. Reset network settings

Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Network Settings. Saved Wi-Fi passwords are deleted.

Good to know

A VPN app or profile can block mobile data. Switch it off under Settings, VPN as a test.

If you see "No Service", start here instead: iPhone says No Service or SOS.

If data stopped right after you changed plan or SIM, the network may need to activate it. Call them.

In short: Mobile Data on, Airplane Mode on and off, check allowance and app permissions, carrier update.
