How to turn off 5G on an iPhone

2 min read · 4 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Open Settings, tap Mobile Service, tap your line, then Voice & Data, and choose LTE or 4G. The phone then stays on 4G, which can save battery where 5G coverage is patchy.

5G is faster where the signal is strong. Where it is weak, the phone keeps switching between 5G and 4G, which drains the battery and can make the connection less steady. You can choose which to use.

Step by step

  1. Open Settings and tap Mobile Service

In some regions this is called Cellular or Mobile Data.

  2. Tap your line

With one SIM, tap Mobile Data Options instead.

  3. Tap Voice & Data

    You see three choices.

  4. Choose LTE or 4G

5G Auto, the default, uses 5G only when it will not noticeably reduce battery life. 5G On uses it whenever available. LTE or 4G turns 5G off completely.

Good to know

5G Auto is the best setting for most people. Switch to LTE when you are somewhere with weak 5G and want the battery to last.

On iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, Low Power Mode also switches off 5G, except for video streaming and large downloads.

If there is no 5G option at all, the iPhone is an iPhone 11 or older, or your SIM or tariff does not include 5G.

In short: Settings, Mobile Service, your line, Voice & Data, LTE.
